Muhurat trading is the auspicious trading hour in the stock market, on the Hindu Festival of Diwali (Deepawali). The trading community has retained this as a symbolic and old ritual that has been observed since ages. As Diwali or Deepawali, also marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year, it is believed that trading on this day brings wealth and prosperity throughout the year, called Muhurat trading.
A trading holiday is a day when the stock market or a specific stock exchange like NSE/BSE, is closed for trading, meaning that no buy or sell orders can be executed on that day. This can occur on national or religious holidays, as well as on weekends.
A settlement holiday, on the other hand, is a day when the financial institutions involved in the settlement process, such as clearinghouses and depository trusts, are closed. On a settlement holiday, securities transactions that were executed on the previous trading day cannot be settled, which means that funds and securities cannot be transferred between parties.
It's important to note that a trading holiday and a settlement holiday may or may not occur on the same day. For example, a stock exchange may be closed for trading on a national holiday, but the settlement process may continue as normal and vice versa on some other day.
It is not a universal truth that stocks always drop during holidays. Stock market activity can be influenced by various factors, including economic news, company performance, and global events. Holidays may also result in lower trading volumes on prior and following days, when holidays occur, which can impact stock prices, but the direction of price changes during holidays can vary and is not predictable. Options trading is definitely influenced by holidays, by possibility of gap risk and also theta decay. It is important for options traders to be aware of the holiday schedule and to have a clear understanding of how holidays may impact their positions.
India's capital market segment is open for trading between 6.15 pm to 7.15 pm, usually, on the day of Muhurat Trading, with similar timings from BSE and NSE, the two Indian stock exchanges. This may vary slightly, year on year basis, depending on the auspicious moment, as per the Hindu calendar. Muhurat Trading takes place on Diwali as it is considered an auspicious occasion to buy stocks and make investments.
Trading in the equity futures & option Segment takes place in the same time slot, as that of equities.
Holidays can affect the stock market in a variety of ways. Some of the most common ways holidays can impact the stock market include:
It is important to note that the stock market can move in either direction, regardless of the time of year, and past performance is not indicative of future results.
The last observed holiday by the Indian capital markets/ stock exchanges in 2023 is Christmas Day, which is on December 25th. Any extra holiday introduced by the exchanges is informed to members and the public via circulars on their websites.
